This list is a guide only to help prevent LymphoedemaHot water, steam and sun - Avoid hot baths and showers, saunas and sun bathing. Injections - No injections (or any needles) to be used on affected limb. Blood pressure - No blood pressure to be taken on the affected limb. Air travel - Always wear elastic support (compression) sleeve/stocking on affected limb prior to and during flight. Drink plenty of water, eat very little and light food only and exercise regulary during flight. Avoid alcohol and coffee. Skin care - Moisturise any dry skin and cracks (for example, heels, toes, elbows and fingers). Gloves - Wear rubber gloves when washing up to prevent exposure to hot water, wear durable gardening gloves when pruning, etc., to avoid cuts and abrasions and keep limbs well covered. Burns - Cover limbs and wear oven mitts to protect skin from fat spits, hot pans and steam. Infections - Take care to avoid cuts and infections. Treat immediately at first sign. Hair removal and shaving - Use electric razor only to avoid cuts. No waxing or depilatary creams. Insects - Take precautions if living near or visiting mosquito infested areas, etc. . Exercises - Walking, swimming or specific exercises for the limbs. No excessive use of the limb without a compression garment (ironing, dusting, aerobics) and no heavy lifting (shopping). Wear loose clothing - Tight undergarments, belts, shoes and straps may restrict the lymph flow. Maintenance - Have regular lymph drainage treatments. |
